Often regarded as the Chinese Julia Roberts, international sex symbol Ziyi Zhang (Golden Globe nominee: Memoirs of a Geisha, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Rush Hour 2, Golden Horse nominee: Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) boldly ventures into an actual Julia Roberts-style story with Sophie’s Revenge in a genre not so very well-established on the Chinese circuit. Also featured as her romantic rival is charismatic newcomer Bingbing Fan. Both women speak English.

Plotline: When her handsome surgeon fiance Jeff rejects her for glamorous movie star Anna, feisty cartoonist Sophie decides to break them up and win Jeff back. Her first ploy, “Sympathy and Understanding” fails miserably, as does her second ploy, “Nostalgia.” She feels heartbroken. Even her mother adores Jeff. Her friends invite her to a party to cheer her up where, of course, she runs into Jeff and Anna. She also runs into photographer Gordon who similarly had been dumped by Anna for Jeff. Now with Gordon in tow, Sophie redoubles her efforts. After both “Reinvention” and “Entrapment” fail, she inveigles a reluctant Gordon into helping her with “Arousing Jealousy” by behaving like lovers in front of Jeff and Anna. Jeff finally shows jealousy. Ecstatic, Sophie believes her next ploy “Search and Rescue” should win Jeff back. But Gordon refuses to help. He tells Sophie he has fallen in love with her and wants her for himself. While she ponders her own feelings about Gordon, a repentant Jeff tells her he made a mistake and wants her back. Sophie must choose between the perfect man and the perfect love.
